COMING EVENT

Arboretum plans bird workshop

Scott Arboretum is going to the birds — for workshop topics and garden walk focus, that is. A workshop on the Bird-lover’s Garden will be sponsored by the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Blum classroom and gardens.
Attendees will learn how to adapt their gardens into a four-season bird-friendly zone by meeting their varied feeding, roosting and nesting needs. Sheila Magee, who has 25 years of birding experience, and Nicole Lewis, both gardeners at the Arboretum, will present some of the best ornamental plants to attract birds to your landscape and teach you to identify some possible visitors. Then they will lead a short walk through the Arboretum to see some of these plants in the gardens.
If your birding interest is piqued, you can return to the Arboretum the following morning, May 4, at 7 a.m. for a better chance at seeing unusual migrating birds on the Early Morning Bird Walk which is free and open to the public. The tour will depart from the Arboretum office, but will be canceled in inclement weather.
Workshop registration is limited to 24. The cost is $15 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Remember to dress for weather and walking.
For more information, call the Arboretum Offices at (610) 328-8025 or visit www.scottarboretum.org.

Garden tour offered in Baltimore

The Horticultural Society of Maryland Inc. is offering its annual fundraising garden tour on Sunday, June 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Baltimore.
Four gardens located in the Homeland, Roland Park and Guildford areas of Baltimore City will be at their peak for visitors. These city gardens, old and new, will be in full bloom with a bounty of roses, colorful perennials, desirable collector plants and trees used in unusual ways to accomodate narrow city lots. Water and stone are a feature in all the gardens, including a hillside rock garden alive with native plants and a large natural pond backed by a bamboo forest.
All have beautiful hardscapes installed by local designers, statuary and fountains collected by the owners on their travels, and even a putting green. The date for this tour was selected by one of the garden owners to showcase a large collection of roses which will be in bloom.
Cost of the tour is $20. For more information, e-mail gardentour@mdhorticulture.org or call (410) 821-5561. For tickets, call (410) 821-5567.

To have your event listed in this space, call (800) 634-5021, fax to (410) 822-5068, or send it by e-mail to kinsley@americanfarm.com.
