Maryland’s Ag Fund — a political action committee affiliated with Maryland Farm Bureau issued — its first ever endorsements last week.
A committee of 12 board members, half Democrats, half Republicans, met in Randallstown, Aug. 26 to hammer out a list of agricultural-friendly political candidates for the Maryland House of Delagates and the State Senate.
Kent County farmer Pat Langenfelder said the group “wanted to support and endorse candidates who are supportive of agriculture.” The group relied on county Farm Bureau committees in many cases. She said the group looked at the voting records of incumbants on issues of importance to the farming community in making the picks.
The group did not yet endorse a candidate for governor. However, counties are being polled and a gubernatorial endorsement may follow.
The agriculture fund was created in 1999, making this the first opportunity the fund has had to endorse candidates.
“We looked at a whole spectrum of issues,” Langenfelder. “No single issue dominated.”
She also said in some races, picks weren’t made when the committee wasn’t comfortable choosing.
