Bull semen stolen from Kent County, Md., farm

There’s a first time for everything.
Laura Phipps, the owner of Centerdel Farm in Kennedyville, Md., discovered that some Holstein bull semen from her barn was missing two weeks ago. The semen was taken from an office located inside the barn.
“It was old semen from Holstein bulls that were long since dead and they were well known,” Phipps said. “The semen was my father’s and he died in 1995.”
“I’ve been here for 20 years and I’ve never had a report of bull semen stolen for anything,” said Lt. Brian Kirby of the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
Kirby said the theft may have occured within the last month.
“What I wanted to do with it was sell it, but I guess someone beat me to it,” Phipps said. “There are people who use older bulls and will pay big money for it.”
Phipps uses artificial insemination on her farm but mainly uses modern semen. She said when she discovered the theft, she was recovering from a hand injury and had gone into the barn to practice artificial insemination when she noticed the container was 99 percent empty.
Phipps estimated the loss to be at about $2,000.
There are currently no suspects and the case is still under investigation according to the sheriff’s office.
