OCEAN CITY, Md. There are only a few changes in the upper echelon of leadership of the Maryland Farm Bureau for 2008, but no surprises.
Closing out their three-day annual meeting in Ocean City last Wednesday, the delegates re-elected, without opposition, the three top officers of the farm organization and were informed of the appointment of six new county Farm Bureau presidents.
There were no new nominations offered to oppose any of the incumbent officers.
The presidents of the state’s 23 county Farm Bureaus serve as the organization’s board of directors. The board includes two directors from Frederick County and two from Carroll County and, new this year, two from Anne Arundel County.
Mike Phipps of Owings, in Calvert County, was elected MFB president. He stepped into the post when former president Buddy Hance was named deputy state secretary of agriculture.
From the delegates, it was a vote of confidence in Phipps who throughout the convention displayed an affable and sure-footed leadership ability.
Patricia Lagenfelder of Kennedyville in Kent County was elected to another term as first vice president and Chuck Fry of Tuscarora in Frederick County will serve as second vice president. The delegates earlier approved a resolution eliminating the position of a third vice president.
Six new county Farm Bureau presidents, serving in the wake of the retirement of the previous presidents, were welcomed to the board of directors. They are Glen Stallman in Allegany County, Keith Wills in Baltimore County, Harry Moreland in Caroline County, Paul Miller in Garrett County, Brian Quinn in Kent County and Danny Holland in Worcester County.
Three counties have dual directorships. They are Carroll County President David Beall joined by Joe Kuhn; Frederick County President Gareth Harshman joined by Thomas Browning; and this year, Anne Arundel County Jeff Griffith joined by his father and veteran MFB leader, Earl Griffith.
Also serving on the board of directors are representatives of the Farm Bureau Women and Young Farmer organizations.
