Del. foresters engage in ‘data dump’

DOVER, Del. — About 50 stakeholders in the Delaware forestry industry gathered last week at the Department of Agriculture (DDA) for a strategic planning session on the future of forestry in the state.
The group was divided into smaller groups and each discussed four topics: Trends and issues in the world that may impact the DDA’s forest service, areas the service has excelled, the critical issues facing the DDA and how each group would structure the department’s forest service for the year 2012.
Bill McGowan, University of Delaware Extension agent for community development, told the crowd the session was a “data dump” to get all ideas out for discussion and on paper.
“You have to identify the critical issues,” he said. “You have to get them in the play because if you don’t get them in the play, they get forgotten about as you go on down the road.”
As the session progressed, many common themes emerged among the groups.
More outreach and education about the role forestry plays in the state, supporting legislation that encouraged the production of biofuels from wood products and discouraging legislation that hampers opportunities for industry growth were all ideas mentioned repeatedly.
State Forester Austin Short, said the information and suggestions gathered would be used as the basis for developing a five-year plan for the forest service at an upcoming strategic planning retreat this month.
