Perdue plant suffers smoke, water damage

3.21.2006

SEAFORD, Del. — There was a minor fire at the Perdue AgriReCycle plant on Wednesday morning. An alarm was activated because of high levels of smoke.
Julie DeYoung, spokesperson for Perdue Incorporated, added the building was safely evacuated with no injuries.
About 10 local volunteer fire companies responded to the call and brought the smoking material under control by mid-morning.
“Fortunately, damage was confined to one piece of equipment, except for water damage from the firefighters’ efforts,” said DeYoung, adding they expected to be able to resume product shipments from existing inventories by March 16 and to begin processing again by March 20.
Tom Ferguson, the plant’s Director of Sales and Marketing, said the water from the fire companies probably caused more damage than the fire. He noted the fire did not cause any type of environmental problem from the plant such as oozing smut or gushing poultry litter.
