The Delaware Farm Bureau celebrated its 60th anniversary at the group’s spring banquet at the Felton Fire Hall on March 29. More than 265 Farm Bureau members and invited guests attended the annual event.
Kent County Farm Bureau President Robert Garey welcomed attendees, followed by a presentation by Young Patriots Essay Contest Winner Kirsten Winston. Her essay on “What it means to be an American” was chosen as the overall winner in the contest open to 10th through12th graders across the country. She is the daughter of Dr. Bradley and Lisa Winston of Milford, Del. Kirsten is home schooled at “Winston Learning Academy.” The family refers to it by that name because the Winstons have 11 children.
Winston’s presentation, which is printed in this issue’s Next Generation section, was followed by a legislative update by Scott Kidner, the Delaware Farm Bureau’s lobbyist, and comments by Garey and Robert Baker, DFB’s president.
In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the Delaware Farm Bureau, Jack Peterman of Levy Court presented a special tribute to Garey. Three farm bureau members were also recognized by Garey as original members from the bureau’s inception in 1944. Those members were Maurice Adams, Bob Collins and Bill Bullock.
A monetary presentation was made by Robert Garey to the FFA and 4-H. The Kent County Farm Bureau donated $1,000 to each organization. Kevin Vandervort, the state chairman of the Young Farmers & Ranchers, gave a report on this year’s YF&R activities and emphasized the importance of getting young farmers involved in the organization.
Kitty Holtz, Kent County women’s chair, presented this year’s scholarships to four students. This year’s $1,000 state scholarship winner was Mel Wyatt Jr. Wyatt will graduate from Lake Forest High School in May and plans to attend the University of Delaware parallel program in Georgetown and pursue a career in agriculture. He has been active in 4-H, FFA, and the Burrsville Ruritan Club. He is the son of Chris and Crystal Wyatt of Harrington. Wyatt’s great-grandfather, Maurice Adams, is a life-long member of the Delaware Farm Bureau.
The Roland Garrison Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,300 was awarded to Wendy Hrupsa. She is the daughter of Thomas and Barbara Hrupsa of Felton, Del. Hrupsa is a senior at Lake Forest High School and plans to attend Delaware State University and pursue a career in agri-business. She has also been involved in FFA.
The Beatrice Gooden Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,300 was awarded to Elizabeth Palmer. She is the daughter of Danny and Sandy Palmer of Wyoming, Del. Palmer is a senior at Caesar Rodney High School and upon graduation she plans to pursue a career in business management at Delaware State University. Palmer is active in the Business Professionals of America and the Blue/Gold Club.
Hallie Thompson was the recipient of the $1,300 J. Hubert Cannon Memorial Scholarship. Thompson is a senior at Dover High School and upon graduation she plans to attend the University of Delware in Newark and pursue General Agriculture and Animal Science. She is active in 4-H, FFA and the National Honor Society. Thompson is the daughter of Robert and Barbara Thompson of Hartly, Del.
