Delmarva Poultry Industry Inc. creates second electric buying group
4.10.2007
GEORGETOWN, Del. Following a successful electric buying group for its members late last year, Delmarva Poultry Industry Inc., the trade association for the peninsula’s broiler chicken industry, is creating its second electric buying group to help its members lower their electric bills.
DPI members in Delaware and Maryland who receive service from Delmarva Power qualify for the Electric Buying Group, whether they are poultry growers, other businesses or individuals at their homes.
“We had quite a few businesses join DPI last year to be eligible for the first electric buying group and we expect more businesses to join DPI this spring to qualify for the lower prices we will be receiving,” said DPI President Roger Marino.
Under the program, interested DPI members will enroll in the pooled electric buying group and then DPI’s electric consultant will identify electric suppliers interested in working with the group.
The low bidder will be selected and on contract signing day, tentatively scheduled for early May, enrolled members will be offered one year electric contracts that they can accept or reject.
The absence of third-party electric suppliers for the Eastern Shore of Virginia, the legal prohibition for municipal electric customers to take part in these types of buying groups, and DPI’s inability to obtain lower prices for customers of the three electric cooperatives on Delmarva than what they are paying now limit the DPI program to Delmarva Power customers in Delaware and Maryland.
In DPI’s first Electric Buying Program, more than 200 DPI members, with more than 300 electric meters, participated.
It is estimated they are saving more than $200,000 during the six months of their contracts.
In the upcoming program, a one-year contract will be offered.
DPI is mailing information packets to more than 1,500 members and will hold educational meetings in the coming days to inform members about the program and give them an opportunity to enroll.
Persons interested in attending any of the meetings should contact the DPI office.
Meetings are scheduled as follows:
• Monday, April 16, 8:30 to 10 a.m., DPI offices at the University of Delaware Research and Education Center, 16684 County Seat Highway, Georgetown, Del.
• Monday, April 16, 1:30 to 3 p.m., MidAtlantic Farm Credit Office, Deep Shore Road, Denton, Md.
• Tuesday, April 17, 8:30 to 10 a.m., Center for Food Science and Technology Building, Vaughn Road, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Md.
In addition, DPI’s electric consultant will work with members at the DPI Booster Banquet from 5 to 9 p.m. on April 19 at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center.
More information about the process will be available on the DPI Web site at www.dpichicken.com.
Individuals and businesses that are not DPI members can join by April 26 to qualify for this program.
