'So far, so good ...'
2.28.2006 - Some of you readers from Maryland’s Mid-Shore may recognize my name and the title of this column from a daily newspaper’s sports pages.
I’ve been the new editor of The Delmarva Farmer for just a few weeks and although I still hold a great passion for sports I’ve already seen there is plenty to learn and follow in the world of agriculture. My new position allows me to tap into the excitement of following farming that must have been buried in me, one which I wasn’t aware.
To be fair, my farming knowlege is minimal. My mother grew up on a farm in Sudlersville, Md., and her parents lived there until 1980. Many of my fondest memories of my childhood are from weeklong summer vacations when I stayed with my grandparents, where they raised chickens and grew corn along Route 301. I am now married into a farm family. My father-in-law trains standardbred race horses. My wife and I and our first child who is expected in late May now live on a corner of land of what was once her maternal grandparents’ farm.
Plenty of people have asked me about my transition from sports writing to covering farming issues. Holding a cautious, close-to-the-vest attitude by nature, I usually answer, “So far, so good.”
I invite you to write me by mail, or at kevin@americanfarm.com. I look forward to meeting you.
