SLATER, Iowa Carly Santini of Stewartsville, N.J., recently placed first in the ridge-till non-irrigated division of the 2006 National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) corn yield contest for New Jersey.
Santini placed in this division with a yield of 232.2 bushels per acre with Garst brand 8313CB/LL, a 114 general relative maturity corn hybrid.
The NCGA corn yield contest is an annual national competition between corn producers with the goal of producing the highest yields.
Growers compete in a number of production categories, including non-irrigated, no-till/strip-till non-irrigated, no-till/strip-till irrigated, ridge- till non-irrigated, ridge-till irrigated and irrigated classes.
Overall, 26 growers planting a Garst hybrid placed third or higher in this competition.
“The 2006 growing season was another year of challenges,” says Garst area agronomist Dervin Druist, who serves growers in New Jersey and New England states. “The season began very dry at planting time, but by mid-summer, these growers were hit with excessive rainfall in a short period oftime followed by very dry conditions into the harvest. The winning growers achieve these spectacular yields by paying attention to detail.”
Santini planted the corn on May 3 in 30-inch rows and 32,000 plants per acre.
The field was previously planted to corn.
Santini harvested on Sept. 26.
