N.J. FFA honors its members at convention

NEW BRUNSWICK ­­— More than 485 FFA members, advisers and guests from across the state attended the 78th annual New Jersey State FFA Convention on May 22-24 at Rutgers University to honor fellow members for their achievements, elect new officers and conduct other business.
More than $16,500 in college scholarships were awarded to FFA members, with an additional $6,400 in awards presented to FFA chapters and individuals. Scholarships and awards were sponsored by the state and national FFA Foundations, the State FFA Association and other agricultural organizations.
FFA is a national organization of more than 490,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
FFA develops students’ potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The culmination of the event was the election of the 2007-08 State FFA Officer team, the group of FFA members chosen to provide leadership for the coming year in the New Jersey FFA Association.
The new officers are Alyssa Mottram, Phillipsburg FFA, Phillipsburg, State President; Amanda Hall, Woodstown FFA, Pilesgrove, State Vice President; Karis Byram, Allentown FFA, Allentown, State Secretary; Karoline Schoenlank, Phillipsburg FFA, Stewartsville, State Treasurer; Joshua Alster, Allentown FFA, East Windsor, State Reporter; Desiree Beam, Philipsburg FFA, Stewartsville, State Sentinel; Stacey Daniels, BCIT Westampton FFA, Willingboro, State Parliamentarian.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS
FFA Jackets: Fifteen recipients received jackets through the “Blue Jacket. Bright Futures.” program. Winners had to submit an application consisting of short essay questions related to their experience in the FFA jacket. The winners were: Andrew Taylor (Buena Regional), Kasha Tucker (Buena Regional), Nick Holland (Cape May County Technical School), Brittney Jordan (Cape May County Technical School), Kylie Smith (Cape May County Technical School), Holly Toft (Cape May County Technical School), Kerri Caponetto (Freehold), Rebecca Gluckman (Freehold), Jordon Horowitz (Freehold), Kaitlyn Lord (Freehold), Kasey DiGirolamo (Middlesex — Piscataway), Amanda Herbert (Middlesex — Piscataway), Lindsey Horvath (Middlesex — Piscataway), Rob Lavelle (Middlesex — Piscataway) and Natalia M. Lopez (Union County)
FFA Week Award: Earning first place and receiving $100 and a plaque was the BCIT Westampton FFA Chapter. The FFA Week Award is presented to the chapter that has an outstanding program of activities for its school and community during National FFA Week, held on Feb. 17-24.
The 2006-07 NJ FFA Member of the Year was Joshua Alster, Allentown FFA Chapter. Josh served as his chapter reporter and vice-president. His supervised agricultural experience involves working as a veterinary technician. He aspires to become a large animal veterinarian.
2007 Star Farmer Award: Kristina Tillou, Hackettstown FFA Chapter received $300 for outstanding achievement in a production agriculture supervised agricultural experience program.
2007 State Star in Agricultural Placement: Adam Kimble, Warren Hills FFA Chapter received $300 for an outstanding placement supervised agricultural experience program. His placement experience was in the area of diversified livestock production.
2007 State Star in Agricultural Business: Mark Boyko, Piscataway FFA Chapter received $300 for an outstanding agribusiness supervised agricultural experience program.
Proficiency Awards: A Proficiency Award is presented to a member who has displayed outstanding leadership and development in his/her Supervised Agricultural Experience program. Each of the following members received a Proficiency Award from one of 47 different project areas:
• Floriculture Placement Proficiency — Jacklene Oakes, Freehold FFA
• Landscape Management Placement Proficiency — Anthony Johnson, Cape May Tech FFA
• Outdoor Recreation Placement Proficiency—– Amanda DiVita, Freehold FFA
• Specialty Crop Production Placement Proficiency — Ryan McCluskey, Cape May Tech FFA
• Turf Grass Management Placement Proficiency — Kenneth Howell, Cape May Tech FFA
NJ FFA Essay: Division 2 winner — Daniel Zaffos, Allentown FFA Chapter
The H.O. Sampson Award Program: Recognition highlights those chapters with outstanding participation in state-level activities. Gold, Silver and Bronze Ratings are given to chapters based on a participation percentage.
