Sam BaseleyOklahoma State University Sam Baseley is a hard man to track down. He’s busy this summer doing what he loves – helping his uncle manage a cattle ranch in Kansas.
“We took 300 head out yesterday and 300 today,” he said in a recent telephone interview.
Baseley helps his uncle’s cowboys with the wrangling and riding. “It’s what made me want to be a ranch manager,” he said.
Growing up on his father’s 15 head cattle farm in Thurmont, Md., Baseley started raising Angus cattle to show. “My interest in just agriculture grew.”
He became involved in the Frederick County 4-H when he was eight. “4-H gave me a lot of different experiences. I met a lot of people and learned how to be a leader,” he said.
Baseley said college is the first step toward his goal in ranch management. He plans to attend Oklahoma State University to study agricultural business with an emphasis in ranch management.
“College will give me the business knowledge I need and the internships will give me practical experience,” he said.
The Delmarva Farmer looks forward to helping Baseley’s hard work pay off.
